F...I have NO DOUBT he said the things printed here. For your own sake, don't waste a nano-second trying to study/talk about Latin in Rome with this scandalous loser. I went to Rome 2 summers ago to study with him, and walked out after 2 days. First off, he's a drunk--sits in class with a full bottle of wine and drinks RIGHT OUT OF THE BOTTLE! Gets so hammered he can't even enunciate his words. Every sentence out of his mouth used either the word "asshole" or "jackass," and anything addressed to a student was personally insulting. He demeaned the Pope, mocking his German accent among other things, and belittled Catholic theology, saying he didn't "buy that stuff." In a three-hour course, he spent about 5-10 minutes actually discussing Latin grammar, and most of what he said was wrong (perhaps thanks to the alcohol)! As I wrote to him later, I am a Latin professor and can state with certainly that if he pulled that in OUR school, he'd be fired in less than a week. I'm a tough prof but will NEVER, EVER talk to a student like that! In the Vatican, nobody can stand him, and the word is that the only reason he hasn't been fired is that they don't have a replacement for him handy. I have no doubts that it's his outrageous conduct (which is just the sort of thing that the lapsed Catholics in our group needed to see, a great example!), and not anti-Latin bias, that led to his dismissal from the Greg, FINALLY, last year. It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
