Archbishop Montalvo 1930-2006

Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo Higuera passed away in Rome at 11:10 last night, at the age of 76.
The archbishop, who served as papal nuncio to the United States for seven years, died at a hospice operated by the Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma.
I had the opportunity to spend some time with Archbishop Montalvo during several of his vists to to Massachusetts as well at several other times. He led a fascinating life and I believe he was a great asset to the Church. It was a honor to know him.

His funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Peter's Basilica by Angelo Cardinal Sodano, the Vatican Secretary of State.

May the Angels lead you into paradise, may the martyrs come to welcome you and take you to the Holy City, the new and eternal Jerusalem.

Correction: I originally identified the religious order who cared for the Archbishop as the Sisters of Mercy. That was incorrect. He was actually cared for by the Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma.
Thanks to Koz for making me aware of the error.

I do not mean to be picky, but just to clarify, the Archbishop was cared for by the "Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma" ( http://www.rsmofalma.org/ ), a group quite distinct from the Sisters of Mercy. They are a wonderful group of holy women, known for their fidelity to the Magisterium, often given special missions such as this by the Vatican.

Of course, to be fair, I must state my bias - my daughter is a postulant, soon to be novice, with the RSM. She, and two other sisters, have been providing the Archbishop's hospice care these past ten or twelve weeks.

From what she tells me about him, the Archbishop was quite the inspiration, very gratiously carrying this cross. No pain medication, no complaints.

She has found this opportunity to serve to be very fulfulling, as well as spiritually enriching.

Since you actually knew the man, please accept my condolences. I can attest to at least one more person he touched in his last days!

God Bless.

Thank you for the correction. I am glad to hear that his passing was peaceful and surrounded with love.

Your daughter will be in my prayers.
