In a conversation with an incompetent special lecturer the topic came up of degrees in religious studies. She has a Masters in Religious Studies and claimed that religious studies is the same as theology. It isn't!
Religious studies is exactly what it sounds like. It is the study of religion. All religions. How religion affects society. How society affects religion. How religion affects politics, etc.
Theology is the study of God. How people explain God and the things of God. Theology is interested in doctrine and dogma. It seeks to understand God and the works of God.
While religious studies seeks to understand religion, theology seeks to understand God.
Am I the only one who doesn't see the difference?
